NLP Case Study - 2
We are currently three quarters of the way through this fascinating and genuinely 'life-changing' course. For me, if I'm being honest, the benefits have been much more evident in my personal life than my work life - although the benefits at work are starting to come through as we learn more techniques.
In my personal life, I have used NLP to:-
- Motivate both of my teenage sons to get part-time jobs as the first step to achieving their 'well-formed outcomes'.
- Change my eldest son's belief that he was 'too slow' in tests he had to do to get into college. (I used sub-modalities to turn this into a belief he no longer had, and bring in a new one to believe he was fast).
- I have kept in mind many of the pre-suppositions of NLP when communicating with my wife, and we are getting on better than we have done in a long time.
- I talk/listen more and ask (Milton language type) questions to get other people to talk more, instead of just nodding and smiling politely like I used to.
- I have helped my daughter in law with a number of obsessive compulsive behaviours and phobias that she previously had.
In terms of using NLP at work:-
- In meetings, I consciously (and unconsciously!) mirror people to create rapport and now feel I am 'listened to' more, with my input being valued.
- I keep in mind the NLP presuppositions and find myself asking curious questions about why people do the things they do, and am better able to see other people's points of view.
- I have used anchors to get myself into a resourceful state before meetings, and those meetings have gone very well, with me contributing more than I normally do - and have been able to 'chunk-up' to come up with new ideas and ways of achieving results.
In the future - for my company's benefit:-
- I am leading an initiative to raise the awareness of NLP across the unit to anyone who is interested.
- NLP has motivated me to seek out new and more challenging roles within the company once my current assignment ends. In the last five or six years, I've let myself become stuck in a support role for one particular application - with no real prospect of promotion or advancement. I now feel its time to move out of my comfort zone, take on more responsibility and get noticed. I am going to use NLP to make sure I am listened to, and that my outcome is well-formed!
- NLP will also help me in the future with team-leading responsibilities, as I will be able to communicate better with my team and my own line management."
Thanks for everything you have taught us so far, see you soon!
